New York’s Insurance Mandate for Freezing
New York Insurance Law §3221 requires large-group fully insured plans to cover the diagnosis and treatment of infertility, IVF included. Preservation on medical grounds, ahead of chemotherapy or alongside gender-affirming care, is covered too. Social freezing by choice sits outside the mandate, though employer plans frequently bolt it on.[33]
Up to three IVF cycles fall under New York’s mandate where the indication is medically necessary. What your own plan covers varies, so check with member services and HR before you book.
State-Specific Considerations
No US metro costs more than New York City. Real estate, a dense concentration of embryologists, and heavy demand from career-focused patients all feed the premium. Some patients cross into New Jersey (RMA NJ, IRMS) or head out to Long Island and save $3,000 to $6,000 a cycle.
Among the longest-running US programs, Cornell IVF has published a great deal of outcomes data. NYU Langone, Mount Sinai and Columbia run well-regarded academic programs of their own. Boutique names such as Extend, Kindbody and Spring often lead with a lower headline price, so check whether vitrification and the first year of storage sit inside it.
