Egg Freezing Cost in the UK
How the NHS funds egg freezing
Eligibility for NHS-funded egg freezing depends on regional Integrated Care Board policies, with rules that typically include age, BMI, and a confirmed medical reason that treatment will harm future fertility. The NHS does not fund egg freezing for non-medical reasons. Medical necessity includes before chemotherapy, radiation, gender-affirming care, and certain medical conditions.[25]
NHS funding approval typically means treatment at an NHS fertility unit or a private clinic with NHS-funded slots. Storage duration under NHS funding depends on the ICB. Some ICBs cover 5 to 10 years. Others fund longer periods.
What private clinics charge
For private egg freezing in the UK, the total expense is between £5,000 and £8,500, though typical patients pay £7,000–£8,000. That sum comprises the cycle fee (covering collection and freezing) of £3,500–£5,500 plus stimulation drugs costing £1,500–£3,000. Annual storage, charged independently, runs £125–£350 from the second year onward.

The HFEA regulatory framework
The HFEA regulates all UK fertility clinics. Any clinic offering egg freezing, IVF, or related services must register. Clinics must publish success rates on the HFEA website. These rates are broken down by patient age and previous treatment. This gives transparency on price and outcomes that the US market lacks.[9]
For each treatment, the HFEA charges a fee. Clinics then add this fee to their prices. The HFEA also sets national rules. These cover inspection standards, embryologist qualifications, and patient consent.
Storage rule changes in 2022
UK fertility law now permits a 55-year storage maximum, replacing the old 10-year limit. The change took effect in 2022, with consent renewal required every 10 years. The 10-year limit no longer matched vitrification science, forcing patients to discard viable eggs too early.[10]
UK freezers no longer face a binary choice of use within 10 years or lose them. They can store for the duration that suits their family plans, as long as they continue to renew consent.
UK versus US cost differences
A UK private egg freezing cycle costs £7,000 to £8,000 (~$9,000 to $10,000 USD). That is cheaper than the US national average of $12,000 to $20,000. But storage adds around £250/year in the UK, the midpoint of the £125 to £350 range, versus $750/year in the US, narrowing the gap. And for US patients considering UK treatment, travel and time-off-work costs narrow it further.
The HFEA website is where UK clinics are required to make their success rate data public; in the US, SART publishes outcome data but with less detail. That openness benefits patient protection. No matter where a cycle is performed, patients who examine results will find the UK’s regulatory environment instructive.
